New Equipment Saves Time for Heart Attack Victims

The Corpus Christi Fire Department and emergency medical technicians have a new cardiac alert program that shaves minutes off the time between heart attack and treatment.

The season’s stress could lead to a heart attack or other cardiovascular problems for some.

If it does, paramedic Dan Sheppard said he is ready.

“Time equals death,” Sheppard said. “The longer the time is, the more death to the heart occurs.”

Enter the 12-lead heart monitor.

“It reads 12 different electrical looks at the heart,” Sheppard said. “It looks at the heart from 12 different views.”

Using Bluetooth technology, an EMT is able to send the information to the hospital, alerting them that a heart attack patient is coming.
