Fire at Vila Chocolatão, Brazil

A fire erupts in the Vila Chocolatão, Porto Alegre, in Brazil on the 26th of January 2009. One third of the small village was razed by the flames. It was apparently caused by a forgotten stovetop with food. Photo exclusive by Pedro Revillion, used with permission.

It’s absolutely ridiculous how stories become so warped by the time they’re filtered to Americans. Chocolatao is not a vila; it’s a favela, and it’s ethnic cleansing. For days after this event people rioted in the streets because firefighters and the Brazilian government neglected to help, opting instead for what would be an easier removal of people and space. I was there.
