Two firefighters from Engine 26 were found dead after failing to show up for a roll call while battling a house fire in southeast Houston.
The Houston Fire Department says it was called to the home on Oak Vista and De Leon St. just after midnight Saturday. When fire crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the one-story structure.
Firefighters cut a hole in the roof to help battle the flames, which quickly spread through the attic.
The district chief decided the flames were too much and a ladder truck was put into use.
During a firefighter roll call, it was discovered two of them were missing. They were found in the home several minutes later, and CPR was attempted but they were declared dead at the scene.
There names have not been released, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Apparently one firefighter was a veteran, the other just out of the fire academy.
